Terrifying Tortilla Chips

on July 6, 2008 - 10:00pm

Ghost cookie cutter and tortillasDon't just set out the usual chips this year. Get yourself some corn or flour tortillas and a Halloween cookie-cutter. These are great with your favourite dip or a nice cream cheese spread!

Personally, I found the flour tortillas to be a little bitter so I would encourage you to find corn tortillas. And use a bunch of different cookie cutters (I had bats, cats, ghosts, pumpkins, and witches).

To make chips, place oven rack in middle position. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil.

Brush one side of each tortilla with olive oil and then sprinkle with seasonings of your choice (salt, perhaps some chili powder or cumin).

Using your Halloween cookie-cutter, press into the tortillas to make your shaped chips.

Place the chips in a single layer on your baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until the chips are crisp and light-golden brown (corn tortillas will only take 6 - 8 minutes). Flip the chips over halfway through the baking time.

When baking your chips for the first time, keep a careful eye on them after the first 8 minutes. A few of my first batch were overdone.
