Ghoul Friday

Dollirium Art Doll Gallery "Home Grown Show"

on May 26, 2013 - 8:36am

If you happen to be in the London, Ontario area, be sure to stop by Dollirium Art Doll Emporium from May 26th to July 5th, 2013.

The gallery is hosting a "Home Grown Doll Show" of artists from Ontario, and yours truly is part of it.

Opening reception is this evening from 7 pm to 10 pm and I'm so excited to be part of it, I'm actually going to be making the drive out from Toronto this evening to make a brief appearance.

I've had a sneak peek at the other artist's work, and am thrilled to be in such good company.

If you do make it tonight, I'll be the exhausted, disheveled woman. Nudge me awake and say hi.

Otherwise, you have more than a month to enjoy the show at your leisure.

The gallery is located at 1 Cliftonvale Ave.

If you don't see me, say hi to my figures. It's the first time they've been away from home besides going to new owners, and I'm concerned they might get upset one dark night...and possibly eat the other figures on display. I won't get charged for that, right?

"Lucky 13" Etsy Sale Starts Today

on September 4, 2012 - 12:44pm

The big question at my last show was "do you have an etsy shop?" to which I sheepishly replied "Yes. A very, very, very neglected one".

I thought I would rectify the situation. While I do love (and prefer) selling in person and getting to meet those who adopt my critters, I know there are those of you who can't come out to Toronto every time I have a show. This sale is for you.

It's the Lucky 13 sale. Why the name? Two reasons:

First, the shop will go back into vacation mode on October 13th, 2012 and I'll be taking leftover items to sell at my next show, the Bazaar of the Bizarre. So that's the 13 part.

The lucky part is that, as part of my penance for being such a bad online shop keeper, I'm offering an olive branch to the faithful who come to the blog and follow me online.

I was sorting through my stock and found 6 of my sculpted Undead Head necklaces. I'd made dozens upon dozens of these in 2010. I do not have any intention of making anymore (some people are suited to making jewelry. I am not).

SO the first 6 people who buy an item from the shop and mention "ZOMBIE!" (during checkout, but if you forget just email me with the word and your name) will find a surprise undead gift in their package as a token of my appreciation.

Happy Booday to Me

on March 25, 2012 - 11:28am

Spring has sprung, but instead of flowers, it brings with it some monsters in the making.

In between puppy chaos, I've managed to experiment with some new figures, changing up my style a bit which has been fun. I'm excited to see how they come together, and trying to think outside the coffin...er...box...a bit when it comes to my designs. Now, none of these are revolutionary, but I think taking a step to the right of my usual style is a good thing.

And it's about time I was hit with inspiration. Show season is sneaking up quickly and like old Mother Hubbard, my cupboards are bare.

It's my birthday today. I almost forgot about that too. When you're spinning wildly, time has a way of being elusive.

Today I am off to lunch with a friend (and perhaps a stop for a pint or two) while Yetch babysits Monkey Boo. He's been away to Denver all week, leaving the pup and I on our own. I took the opportunity to do some crash course puppy self-control lessons by staying with my mom and her pack of dogs. Monkey is pretty good around the older dog but wants to wrestle full throttle with Padfoot the Irish Wolfhound. Paddy can fit her whole head in his mouth (even though they are the same age). She doesn't even blink at his size. Even Paddy recognizes she's a wild pup (as you can see from the picture below).

A Toast to Old Man Ludo

on November 18, 2011 - 3:15pm

I am one of those people who, when pressed, will admit to being a skeptic and pessimist; that I believe, overall, the world is full of terrible beings.

While people can be wonderful in moments, I still think we encounter more negative spirits than positive ones. Or at the very least, tend to show each other our more selfish sides than sharing our giving, loving selves.

There are few things (and I mean a trickle in the stream) in this world that always reminded me that we're not all lost in this bungled existence. At the top of the list was Ludo.

I've had many dogs throughout my life, but this creature was different. He was some strange little benevolent gentleman in a furry body; my touchstone whenever I had just about given up on hoping the universe would redeem itself.

Today we took the old man for his last car ride. Before heading to our final destination, we stopped at his favourite place in the world (besides home): a leaf-lined path through the woods up north. We didn't stay long or travel far, but even in the short stroll he was able to take in his weakened state, he seemed more alive than he has the past few weeks (though still heartbreakingly ill). Or maybe more at peace than he has been.

Death is sad, yes. And losing a creature you've a bond with is devastating. But more than that, the world moves on, not knowing it's lost one of the few lights in the gloom. So today, in my own small way with this post, I wanted to make sure as many people as possible knew that one of those lights has been extinguished.

So raise a glass to the old man. Bid him a deserved farewell. Toast all things and people that bring light into our lives. And tonight I'll light a candle because my world has gotten noticeably darker.

Best Spells by Betty Croaker

on November 3, 2011 - 12:15pm

Betty Croaker Spell Book

On Tuesday, I spent close to nine hours putting away Halloween decorations because I decided to completely reorganize the bins (and make sure everything was off the floor since we had that incident with water in the basement after the torrential storm).

While doing so, I came across a box of all the decorations I had made for my first big Halloween party back in Grade 4.

Amidst the paper bats and pumpkins was a bound book entitled "Best Spells By Betty Croaker" (and my other name). I do enjoy that I put a copyright symbol on it.

I'd bound the book with thread and used wall paper for the cover. No, the wallpaper isn't very scary, but when you're little you have to work with what's in the house.

The book is a collection of spells for monsters from A to Z. Some are classic Halloween characters while others are creatures I'd seen in my Dungeons & Dragons books (I didn't play at the time, I just liked having books about monsters).

Want to make a mimic? A Frankenstein monster? A Zorma?

It's all here.

Need an elf for a recipe but don't have one on hand? No worries. There's a recipe for making your own elf.

A is actually an introduction. Note how little Ghoul uses the traditional spelling of Hallowe'en.

I hope you enjoy the pictures below. I got a good chuckle out of them.

Retro Halloween Pictures Starring Ghoul Friday

on October 16, 2011 - 10:33am

On the About page, at the very bottom, I've added a little collage of pictures of me as a little ghoul at Halloween.

The banner leads to a full story of my favourite Halloween memory (a guest post I'd written for another blog in 2010).

AND there's now a link to the image of the fabled spray painted tombstone on the wall (on the About page too), with the first prop I ever made.

Hack! Snort! Groan.

on October 14, 2011 - 7:32am

I think we should replace the spirits and traditional monsters who are referenced in scary stories with the change-of-season virus. It's much more terrifying.

On Sunday, I thought I was just about free of the festering fingertips of whatever cold had me in its grip.

But when I spent 19 hours on Tuesday unconscious,  or wishing I was unconscious, I had my doubts regarding recovery.

I've tried to reason with the bug. I've weakly pointed toward unfinished projects, unmailed items, and important dates on the calendar, but it hasn't made much of a difference.

This morning I made noises like the Tasmanian Devil as my body tried to clear my lungs and air passage. Instead of being saddened by this new state of phlegminess, I was encouraged. If it's finally in my chest, it means my body might actually be purging it from the system instead of letting it hide behind my kidney or whatever spot it's been lurking the last few months (where you always feel like you're about to get sick, then don't).

Ta Da! New Website for October 2011

on September 30, 2011 - 10:33pm

Here it is, the new look for My Ghoul Friday.

There's still some details to add here and there, but overall I'm pleased with the site's organization (and I hope you'll be happier with it too, and be able to find things more easily).

The only sad sacrifice that had to be made were the comments from the past 4 years. I had no way to import them here (I spent hours resubmitting all the comments people left on the "About" page over the years), and had to make the decision to let them go. *sigh*

Where Does the Time Go?

on September 20, 2011 - 9:08pm

Quick little update. I've spent the last few days finally building the new website. Everything is being redesigned. Who knew I had so much content? I'd say I'm more than 70% done. The goal is to have the new site launched by Oct 1. I think you're going to dig it. Until then I won't be adding much of anything new to the site. Besides that, thanks to everyone who sent notes and updates for how they spent Misgivings Day weekend. And since Sam of Trick or Treat fame has been dominating the announcement of every holiday this past year, a friend thought I should have my own Sam promo for Misgivings Day in the form of a sketch. I think it's pretty hilarious.

Good Thing I'm Not a Horse

on July 27, 2011 - 8:07am

Sunday night I managed to mangle my right ankle. Have spent the days since on the couch, saving up energy to wheel myself around the house to get whatever I need while riding my trusty-dusty office chair. I have crutches but can't carry anything with them, and besides, they cause their own pains and aches. I save them for when I have to do the really fun stuff, like stairs.

Plus my poor left knee, that bore the brunt of the fall once my ankle gave out, has its own nasty scrape.

I'm almost a rainbow: my knee with its reds and browns and yellows, and my ankle which right now is only a single shade of blue (but I predict brilliant purples and greens to come).

Needless to say, I have been less than productive. Or cheerful.

Having to take time off work (that I really can't afford), and not being able to work on a proper project for upcoming shows, just adds insult to injury.

Yesterday, though, I was able to paint some mini carnivorous plants I'd built on Sunday. They still need touch ups and final details, but at least that's something.

How did it happen? Well, it's been suggested to me that I stick to a zombie story. Ninja zombies, to be precise. Make up your own plot details as needed.

I'm off to ice the ankle. Hopefully I will be back by the weekend with happier news of progress!
