Blackout Schmackout, I'm on a Deadline

on August 22, 2011 - 8:27am

Storms raged across Ontario yesterday afternoon. Yetch and I were running errands when "tornado activity" was being reported. I'd looked up at the heavy, purple-grey clouds as we were pulling into a parking lot and said "Those look ominous". Turned out I was right.

By the time we were ready to head back to the car, the rain was falling in sheets, slamming into the storefront.

Thunder boomed, sending vibrations through the car as we made our way home. The rain thinned, but you got a sense of how much rain was dropped on the city all at once. Every five minutes we were faced with flooded patches of road where the water tickled the door frame of the car. Branches littered the roads everywhere in our neighbourhood, and even a large tree had been toppled.

We arrived home safe and sound, the sky sunny and blue once more, with only the scattered debris on the roads as evidence of the sudden storm.

That and the fact the power was out across the east end of the city for more than 5 hours.

What does a ghoul on a deadline with a huge show on the horizon do in a blackout? She gathers more than 20 candles to light up her office like a shrine, and does paper mache.

Just me, the work, and my little monkey radio playing commercial-free jazz.

It was actually quite nice, and took some of the pressure off from my looming deadline.

Of course, if it happens again between now and Thursday, I may have a breakdown.

Advice Needed for Large Plants

on August 26, 2010 - 3:01pm

I still have to take some proper photos of the large plants, but I wanted to post this so I could get some feedback before you all vanished for the day. I'll be asking people on twitter as well.

I'm toying with the idea of adding black ribbon tied in a bow around the pot of the plants. I've taken a quick shot of the red plant with the bow and without (see image below).

I'm leaning toward a yes for the ribbon. What do you lot think?

Yes? No?

If someone actually buys one of the large plants (not holding my breath but you never know), and they don't like the ribbon, they can simply take it off. But if it's too...I don't know...fancy? Girlie? I don't want to take away from the overall look of the plant.

So please weigh in with your opinion! And remember, I don't have time to come up with an alternative. It's either yes ribbon, or no ribbon.

Thanks!

129 Eyeballs Later

on August 23, 2010 - 7:38am

I was able to finish all 43 of the little plants by Saturday night, which takes a lot of the pressure off me as the countdown to Friday continues.

I've been working non-stop the past week or so, and will continue to push through until Thursday. Still have to paint the eyeballs for the 3 large plants, and finish the 3 Plague Doctors who are waiting for their faces to be sculpted.

In between, I'll be gathering the other million little things you need to have at a show. And I am absolutely itching to post pictures of some of the new little minions for you, but there just isn't time right now.

I'm excited for Festival of Fear. I'm also really looking forward to the relaxing Monday that follows it.

Up to My Eyeballs in Plants

on August 18, 2010 - 1:22pm

Can't sleep. The plants will eat me. Can't sleep. The plants will eat me.

That's what it's been like for me for the past several days. Or has it been weeks? I've lost all track of time in my dark garden as I cultivate 43 little plants and 3 large ones.

People often ask me how long it takes to make these, especially lately when I mentioned I was making such a big batch at once. To entertain myself, I've decided to measure it by my Twin Peaks collection (as this is what I decided to watch each time I sat down to work on them).

Turns out it takes longer than the entire series of 29 episodes, plus a few hours of bonus features, plus the movie Fire Walk With Me.

I had guessed I'd be in the special features by the time I was working on the pupils. Man, was I off.

Must go. I have a week left to get these puppies done, and I still have the crazy notion I might be able to get a Plague Doctor or two finished before the 27th. *twitch*

Plus, I need to get to the store. I have this weird craving for doughnuts and cherry pie.

Happy Halloween 2009

on October 31, 2009 - 10:35am

It's Halloween morning and my beasties are staring at me, reminding me to post a greeting to you all before I return to the couch.

I'm officially taking today off, lounging around in my "devil made me do it" pajama pants for as long as I can. I promise to have pictures of the Halloween tree and the rest of the decor up soon.

To my seasonal visitors, I hope you'll come visit me again next year. To my regulars, I look forward to swapping Halloween pictures and stories with you in the coming days.
