Nuit Blanche: Pictures

on October 4, 2009 - 9:57am

A night in Toronto during Nuit Blanche
I tried to post pictures on twitter all night, but in case you missed some of the fun, I thought I would post them here along with my favourite images that have yet to be shared.

It was a long night. I'm not sure what I am doing up so early.

But it was fun.

I love seeing the entire city transformed into a strange world of light and colour. And seeing hordes of people on the street at two in the morning. Now if only I could convince them to do the same thing but with a strictly Halloween/horror theme...

Speaking of which, there was less spookiness this year, which is fine, but as I plotted my course I couldn't help but lament their absence.

Highlights this year was an unexpected free ride on the top of a double decker sightseeing bus that shuttled people to the lower east side of the city from downtown. The bus driver was not timid in his manoeuvring through the intersections, adding to the thrills (and chills. It was freezing up there!).

Witch CradlesThe first images come from the Witches Cradle exhibit - a kinder recreation of torture devices used on those accused of witchcraft. People in the crowd were given the chance to be blindfolded and carefully bundled into the cradles which were suspended from the ceiling.

Moving through the financial district, there were Native dancers and midway rides (the midway rides were to show the wild ups and downs of the economy). And people walking through a soundscape.

People were waving arms and jumping on squares (that Yetch and I suspect were simply tape) under the notion it would change the sounds, but we're fairly certain all the sounds were pre-recorded and it was an exhibit of human behaviour rather than creating sound with movement.

Then there was my favourite display depicting clouds (directly below). And a glimpse at the Malabar Costume display window (have they always been so steampunk?).

The last images are those of the earlier mentioned bus ride at lightening speed through the city. Plus, cattle in the mist and this lovely sculpture which I believe is actually not part of Nuit Blanche, just really cool (that's my Yetch with the hat).

There were a couple more images that made it on to Twitter - one of such rarity that may be of more interest than others to some of my more faithful followers - but I'll let you decide if it's worth hunting for or not.
