Festival of Fear '09: Joshua Hoffine - a Print, a Pendant, a Kiss

on September 3, 2009 - 8:19am

Joshua Hoffine pendant Gas Mask ChildEverywhere you look online these days (at least in the horror circles), someone is writing about Joshua Hoffine. In fact, people have been writing about him so much, I decided not to.

That's not to say I am not a fan; I've spent many an hour admiring his photographs, reading his blog, and watching his Etsy account for a chance to snag one of his pendants. The jewelry always sells out before I can get it.

But not this time.

The first thing I did when I saw Joshua at the Rue Morgue Booth was ask him if he had pendants for sale. He did.

And this is the one I bought.

I didn't realize you can also wear them as a pin.

Joshua Hoffine and Jen Strychnine
I met both Joshua and the lovely Jen (who makes the pendants). I asked to have the three of them in the picture together (the third person being my pendant), and caught them in a kiss.

Of course it figures the photograph I take of the professional photographer is blurry. I was moving too quickly, wanting to catch the moment (either that or using my tripod has made me soft).

The two of them were friendly, approachable, and happy to answer questions from the swarm of fans buzzing around the display.

Yetch and I had a hard time choosing from the gallery of prints in front of us. Eventually, we settled on Death, the tightrope walker. Not only is it an interesting depiction, it reminds me of something Joshua said on his website:

I believe that the horror story is ultimately concerned with the imminence and randomness of death, and that there is no certainty to existence. The experience of horror resides in this confrontation with uncertainty. Horror tells us that our belief in security is delusional, and that the monsters are all around us.

Death by Joshua Hoffine
So get thee to his website. When you purchase his prints, you're not only getting an exquisite piece of art for your wall, but you're also supporting a gentleman who is kind, soft spoken and just a pleasure to talk with.
