A Fall Day Road Trip

on October 2, 2009 - 9:11am

Pumpkin Patch
Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see.

I think Linus would have approved of the pumpkin patch I went to yesterday. Some of the larger pumpkins were the size of a crouched adult. Beautiful orbs of orange.

I went on a road trip north to Shakespeare ON yesterday to deliver books to Colleen at the Brew Garden Street Side Cafe. While the crisp clean air and the various colours that now crown the trees up north are signs of the start of the season for me, it indicates the closing of the cafe for Colleen until next spring.

Shakepeare ON is a very small town. Standing on the main street, you can see the beautiful houses must have been built over a 100 years ago. Antique stores are popular, and across from Colleen is an artist space. Not a bad place to live (or have your book sold!).

Despite having hung up her serving apron for the season, Colleen made me a wonderful cup of Pumpkin Spice Coffee. So good, I bought a bag of it to take home for myself. Luckily for others, Colleen continues to sell her products over the winter.

As we drove through the small towns, one theme emerged: Gargoyles. I don't know if they are just out for Halloween, but there were a number of gated properties that had two gargoyles flanking the entrance. I'd like to think they are there all year.

And the pumpkin patch I highlighted above belongs to Birtch Farm's Market and Winery in Woodstock, ON. Lovely spot with friendly staff. Corn stalks (too tall to fit in my car, sadly), bales of hay, and...wait...was that...no...it couldn't be.

Ghost pumpkins.

I've never seen a real white Ghost pumpkin before! Sure, I have 5 fake white ones in my collection. But my gosh. There they were.
White Pumpkins

I bought two. I'm hoping that they will last for some time, fully intact on the porch. I have named them "Boo" and "Spooky".

I also picked up a bottle of their apple and raspberry wine.

Here are a few more Autumn images for you to enjoy. I hope they get you into the spirit of things.
