Excuse Me While I Geek Out: Battlestar Galactica
No, you're not on the wrong website. I've just changed gears for today. Forgive my lapse into nerd-dom, but I am a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica, which means it's an exciting time for me.
Starting tomorrow (Friday) morning, the Space channel (Canadian version of the Sci-Fi Channel) will be starting a BSG marathon, playing Season 4 episodes back to back, leading up to the new episode tomorrow night at 10 pm.
To celebrate this, I've started throwing together an impromptu Battlestar Galactica themed mini party for Yetch and I (Yetch, you need to stop reading this post now. Spoilers ahead).
Since I DO post on here about party themes, I thought it would be ok if I drift away from horror and into science fiction for my blog topic. So...what do I have planned?
The plotting has been very last minute, so I'm not sure how much I will get done tomorrow. I decided to start putting the food together tonight.
After a search online for ideas (of which there are very little), I decided to begin with the simplest. I've baked little cyclon raiders - crab-stuffed crescent rolls with tiny red pepper slices for an eye.
Someone had mentioned this idea on a blog, but for the life of me I can't remember what the blog was called.
What's next? I have a tray of brownies cooling in the kitchen. I hope to try and make a basic image of a Cylon Centurion (just the head). If I can't, I'll simply cut them into squares...with the corners cut off, naturally.
I also hope to make a meat pie with the BSG emblem on the top crust; some guacamole (in a salute to the algae they had to eat) with tortillas shaped like BSG dog tags and the military pins; and...well...I'm not sure yet.
For decor, I am going to recreate Starbuck's Eye of Jupiter painting and hang it above the tv.
That's it for now. If I come up with other ideas or take more pictures, I'll post them. And hey, if you have any ideas, I still have 24 hours to implement them!
Update: 8:30 am Friday
I woke up early to decorate the brownie before Yetch got out of bed. Have I mentioned I don't know how to decorate with icing? I've only drawn some sad little spiderwebs in the past. It's hard to decorate a dessert, especially when you are clueless.
And did you know that you can make black icing pretty easily, and light grey icing pretty easily, but dark grey icing is actually...purple? Did you also know that black sprinkles stick to everything, and if you spill them on the floor and step on them, they leave black smudges on the floor?
My sad looking cylon centurian here was iced grey, then drawn in sprinkles (I used a folded piece of paper to pour the sprinkles out). I haven't had time to tidy him up yet because Yetch woke up, craving coffee. We'll see if I can get it looking cleaner.
Brownies can't end up on that cake fail website, can they?
More updates to come!
Update: 10:50 am Friday
Well, the marathon has started, and I have created the main dish. It's a roasted turkey breast meat pie. I tried my best to create the emblem for BSG on top. The crust is homemade, and it's gluten-free (I'm already pushing my digestive luck with the crescent rolls). If I were working with a wheat flour crust, I could have made a firmer pattern on top. Gluten-free pastry is more...finicky, and I still haven't mastered it. All in all, I am fairly happy with how it looks. This image is before it's baked. The pie is currently in the oven.
Now it's time to start on the decorations.
Update: 12:30 pm Friday
The pie is out of the oven, looking very nicely browned with great shaded contours along the emblem.
I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted for decoration. I don't have the materials to turn my office into a Galactica barracks, so I thought I would go with something more symbolic. I toyed with the idea of recreating the map to earth that Starbuck paints, but instead went for the first time in the series where you get the sense something important is happening with her destiny (plus the scene takes place in an apartment, so my walls don't take away from the effect).
I've recreated Starbuck's 'Eye of Jupitor' painting she'd done when she was younger. You can see an image of the original scene here.
Update: 1:50 pm Friday
I've created a basic homage to the memorial hall on the ship by simply printing out pictures of some more notable characters that have died.
Here's a picture of the meat pie, baked. Now it's time to start on the tortilla chips.
Update: 3:56 pm
As mentioned earlier, the chips are baked corn tortillas, cut into the shapes of BSG dog tags and military bling.
I've put out metal cups, a scotch bottle and a decanter. I've cut the corners off the napkins. And, of course, I put out the shiny toaster. All that's left to do is make the algae guacamole.
I think this may be the last update, unless I am hit with a sweeping stroke of genius.
For all you fellow BSG fans, have a good time watching the first of the last episodes. So say we all.
P.S: I almost forgot to show you my depiction of Saul Tigh.
