Under the Sycamore Trees

on October 24, 2012 - 12:48am

I've been racking my brain trying to come up with an easy way to incorporate sycamore trees into the theme decor without having to build a bunch of them. In the show Twin Peaks, the entrance to the Black Lodge is surrounded by a ring of sycamore trees.

It finally hit me that I should make paper bag lanterns. They are cheap (because I have overspent my budget), easy (because I am running out of time) and I've had it on my "to do" list for years (but it never fit into my theme).

Sat down with a set of paper bags, a paint brush, and black paint. I started looking for free spooky tree clip art. Didn't find any I was overly crazy about, and became impatient. Decided I would throw caution to the wind, and just paint them by hand (because at this point, I'm too impatient to even do a pencil sketch first).

And voila! There you have it.

The best part about this is I have never been able to come up with decent tree silhouettes in the past (or I gave up too easily because I was afraid I couldn't). But after tackling the hair on the Roman sculpture in my previous post, I figured I should continue my streak of being artistically brave.

If YOU want to be brave too, I give some quick hints on how to paint your own trees in the how- to section

I love luminarias and spooky trees, so you have managed once again to inspire me. And I thought I was done with Halloween decorating.

Hooray! Glad to inspire in the last moments up to the big day :)

oooh--I think these are completely awesome--you clever girl!

Goes to show that sometimes we forget about the simplest ideas, and they can be show stealers. Thanks Pam :)

We are doing a loose Hitchcock theme. I wanted to incorporate the Bates' house but wasn't sure how with time running out. You may have remedied the problem.

Perfect! It's such an easy thing. And if the outline of the house ends up being too hard, spelling out "Bates Motel" isn't a terrible idea either.

Very nice touch Ghoul! They look fantastic! remind me to share some pics the luminaries my cousin made this year ( different theme and media, but still stunning nonetheless)
