Monkey Boo Likes Halloween Too

on October 7, 2012 - 10:55am

When they invented Halloween products for dogs, they had people like me in mind. They saw me a mile away.

My budget for this year's Halloween decor is tight. I mean stranglehold-tight. And with the exception of a couple purchases for this year's theme, I put myself on a Halloween diet: no spending besides what is on the list.

I've just spent an hour sewing up Monkey Boo's ripped and mangled toys. It wouldn't be so bad, but she likes to eat the cotton stuffing inside. I do my best to repair them, sometimes removing the remaining stuffing before sewing them back up. Her favourite toys have been sewn multiple times, but there were a number that were beyond repair.

I can't deprive my dog of toys, right?

And if she doesn't have these to chew on, then she'll chew up my house, causing more damage and therefore costing me more money in the long run. Am I right or am I right?

Besides that, Miss Boo has outgrown her sweaters (yes, I have a dog that shivers and frets when it's cold outside. No, I am not normally someone who would dress up their dog all the time. But it turns out Boston Terriers are not made for the cold, and I have come to accept that I am one of those people who puts sweaters on their dog). With the temperature dropping, she's already started giving me looks of "I'm not going out there" when I open the door and a cold wind hits us.

Here's where the story gets a bit funny.

As much as I'm not a fan of doggie sweaters, Monkey Boo loves them. And I mean LOVES them. She gets as excited about her walking harness as she does for her sweater.

I didn't realize how much she loves them until I opened the box and pulled out her sweaters. I should preface this: Monkey hasn't seen a sweater for months. She's only had two sweaters in her short life. So I didn't expect her to know what it was when I pulled the new ones out of the box.

She lost her mind. It was like she won the doggie lottery. She took off, running full speed around the house, panting and grinning (she rarely pants). OHHH MYYY GOOOODDD! SWEEEAAAATERS!

When I took the sweater off the little hanger, she could barely sit still, hopping all over the couch. Put it on me! Put it on me!

And although they are a little big for her at the moment, and make her look like a sausage, they are ridiculously cute.

And practical. Very, very practical. It was a need, not a want

p.s. She already knows what "pumpkin" means, as in "go get the pumpkin". I'm a proud Halloween dog-momma.

Those sweaters are a hoot and so is that story.

It's a good thing she's so entertaining or else I'd have lost my mind with such a crazy, weird dog by now.

And yes, Happy Thanksgiving!

She likes the Halloween toys, and the Halloween sweaters, now only if I could get her to like scary movies! There's something about the sound effects used - often in the music - that upsets her. Doesn't blink at the yelling or crashes, but spooky music and weird sound effects, forget it. Barking and low growls.

Maybe I can bribe her with more sweaters.
