Who is Ghoul Friday?

I'm a Canadian artist living in Toronto, Ontario. When I'm not transforming my house into a ghoulish scene at Halloween, I'm creating mini-monsters for local shows in the city (and occasionally, for sale online).

But that's jumping to the end of the story. Here's the beginning...

It started when my mother let me spray paint a tombstone on the concrete wall of our basement for my Grade 4 Halloween party.

It was my first real Halloween party, and I wanted it to be great. I constructed a haunted house the length of the basement and lead people through dangling, slimy snakes hanging from the ceiling - just one example of the many forms and obstacles waiting for them in the shadow. I hadn't gotten over my fear of the dark, and I was deathly afraid of being in the basement alone (never mind with the lights off), but to make sure I could see well enough to safely guide each guest one by one through the haunted space, I sat alone in the pitch black basement for 20 minutes before the party goers even started to arrive.

That's when she was born, the little ghoul in the basement. Since then, she has come back to me every year, usually in late summer, ready to build creatures for Halloween. Sure, she's there throughout the other months, peeking through my eyes at the newest horror film being released, or tickling my neck so I turn to see the brochure for the Festival of Fear coming to the city.

But it's in August when she whispers "Is it time to sit in the dark?"

Yes Friday. It's time. What friends shall we create this year?

I just found your site and I really like some of the things you do and say on here. I would love to link you to my website. I have a start up foam latex mask company and I plan on branching out to props and accessories. I would love to see some of my masks in Canada. Take a look at my site and let me know if a link is possible. http://www.halloweenteam.com Either way you will see alot of me here.
Thanks

I found your website accidentally while pouring through research on the Lake Erie Monster and lake monsters in general. I've been a creator/producer of murder mystery events for the past 20 years (I was retired from it for a while to finish writing a book--but have been dragged, kicking and screaming, back into it).

In all that time I've worked with amazing people like Cedar Point and Ravenwood Castle, but I have NEVER seen anything with the pure joy, the simplicity of purpose, the wonderful sense of awe that your website possesses. You've done a marvelous, marvelous job! Serious and heartfelt congratulations and I intend to stop in here regularly and see what you're "cooking up."

Haven't poked my head in to peek at this page for a while. Thanks for the comments folks. And a special thanks to Denham whose praise had me looking at the floor, pink-cheeked, kicking the dirt, and saying "Aw shucks". What a lovely comment to leave.

Hi Ghoul Friday-
When traveling in Italy during June 2010, my sister and I walked along the same streets in Venice where others had walked during the great plague of 1348-1350. The Black Death, one of the deadliest pandemics in history, resulted in the death of approximately half of the European population. During the plague, "doctors" and other health providers of that time would walk through the streets to check on those afflicted with the infection. They would wear a special outfit that covered their faces and a beak-like nose that would contain spices or aromatics to purify the air and reduce the stench. Being particularly interested in infectious diseases and their impact, I looked for a replica of the Plague Doctor during our two-week vacation and was never able to find one. My sister contacted you and purchased one of your creations and I have to tell you that it is perfect! I have it displayed in my office and it is already a source of conversation. Thanks for your great work. I hope my note inspires others to take notice of your art.

I wanted to say that this has been one of THE most helpful and interesting Halloween-related blogs I have come across so far. I have been collecting bookmarks of Halloween party ideas and yard haunts for months now, and your blog has helped point me in the right direction. Your party suggestions and pictures are inspirational, your links list is superb, your blog posts are interesting, and your artwork is spooky-cute! I look forward to hearing and seeing more from you in the future. Thanks again for helping out like-minded Halloween enthusiasts.

Hi Friday, Recently my wife and I started a new company. All the party stuff we make is "fill-in-the-blank". We have some Halloween tees and I would like to send you one to see if you like our idea. Let me know your mailing address if you are open to this. Thanks!
