Mutterings of a Mad Woman

Unwanted Neighbour

on October 25, 2010 - 10:17am

I've complained in the past about how my street is void of Halloween spirit, but this past week I've been unnerved by a disturbing sight.

Last year the people across the street from me hung a full skeleton on their front porch, much to my delight. But this year another white figure has appeared.

At first he was up against the railing, looking through the bars like a prisoner. Perhaps he's waiting to be picked up, I thought.

But this morning he's sitting comfortably in a chair. I tell myself he might have arthritis and just needs to sit since he's been waiting for his ride for so long. I fear I am deluding myself.

I have my morning coffee out on the porch each day, and with each cup I get more agitated by his stupid smile. What is he doing? Should I call the police? He's an unwanted intruder who needs to be removed.

The Amazing Bird Boy!

on October 23, 2010 - 11:51am

I'm just getting ready to head out to Dia de Los Muertos Festival of The Arts. Thought I would share some last minute additions with you quickly before I skedaddle.

Ever since I made Aucellus, I've had a hankering to make little skeleton birds. Maybe robed creatures. Maybe caged creatures. I didn't know what would come first.

A friend saw Aucky for the first time and said "You should really make small versions of this. I'd buy it."

Everything fell into place (meaning I found items I'd want to use for making such a creature), and the process has begun. The first is the Amazing Bird Boy, a beaked humanoid creature.

I was having some fun with what his species would be, and the closest I came up with was Premuman (Premature Emu Human).

Regardless, he sits upright with a human torso and a definitive birdlike head, with a beak a bit narrower than his feathered brothers. More like a nose.

Ghoul Friday Collections

on October 22, 2010 - 12:02pm

There are so many images of items from my last show that I still haven't posted to the website. I thought I would post pictures I took this morning immediately so they don't get put on the back burner as well. And perhaps it will entice some of you fence-sitters to decide to come out to my show tomorrow!

It's all about miniature sets this time around. First up are the mini jack o'lanterns. People often see my table display and comment on the pumpkin patch I create. So I decided to make 2 tiny pumpkin patches people can take home with them.

Guest Post on ShellHawk's Nest

on October 20, 2010 - 9:48am

Want to know the story behind this picture? Then you'll have to head over to ShellHawk's Nest. She was kind enough to ask me to write a guest post about a Halloween memory, and my favourite memory is captured in that one image.

I normally don't post images of myself, but I thought I would make an exception for Shell. Plus, the glory of the caterpillar costume should not be hidden any longer.

Be sure to nose around her site for a while. She's gathered an interesting collection of guest posts, and I've enjoyed reading everyone's stories so far. It's perfect for getting you into the Halloween mood.

iPhone Umbilical Chord Charger

on October 19, 2010 - 9:15am

I don't own an iPhone.

This almost gives me a reason to buy one.

I suppose making a mechanical tumour wasn't enough for Mio I-zawa.

Why just charge your iPhone when you can plug it into a mass of moving electronic tissue? The noise would drive me crazy after a while but man...that's pretty neat.

Check out some more of his creations on YouTube.

You know, Yetch has an iPhone...

13th Floor Experience at Circus Circus

on October 15, 2010 - 1:32pm

My last Vegas story ends on a happier note. Upon arrival in the city, I learned that Frightdome was happening at Circus Circus, where they turn their theme park into haunted mazes for the month of October.

Well, only on the weekends in the month of October, which proved to be a problem since we had the wedding on the Sunday, and the stag on the Friday, and well...no one was in any shape to do anything on the Saturday in between. Foiled again.

BUT it turned out Circus Circus also offered The 13th Floor Experience which takes place on the 13th floor of the hotel (and as you may know, it's not common for a hotel to have an actual 13th floor). $13 for a 13 minute tour of the haunted 13th floor. Sign me up.

We were greeted by a tiny undead bellman (much smaller and with more character than the tall ghoul in the picture) and taken up the elevator as he told us stories about our destination and how the past inhabitants of the 13th floor have once again taken up residence. I thought it was a nice touch that he told part of the story with his back to us as he leaned into the opposite corner.

A Surprise for GF

on October 14, 2010 - 12:13pm

The best thing to come out of my trip to Vegas was a surprise from Yetch. We'd spent the day apart and when we met up at the hotel again, Yetch was uncharacteristically excited, saying only "I have a surprise for you".

I was very curious. You see, Yetch is almost always running at an even keel. There are few things that cause his calm demeanour to blip from its steady, laid-back consistency. If he's almost giddy, it's got to be good.

And it was.

I'd ranted in the past about how it was next to impossible to get a bottle of Crystal Head Vodka where I live. Some of you were even kind enough to offer to send me an empty bottle, and I thank you for that. It seems now I won't have to trouble you after all.

When I took it out of the box, I wasn't disappointed. It's just as cool as I thought it would be.

A big thank you to my darling Yetch.

I Had a Sally Brown Moment in Vegas

on October 11, 2010 - 11:18am

Freemont in Vegas in October 2010You know. Sally Brown: Charlie's little sister. I had a Sally Brown moment.

While in Vegas, my spirits were lifted when I saw an advertisement for Freemont's Oktober FrightFest. Freemont is old Las Vegas, and FrightFest made promises of Halloween decorations - a full street transformation, to be specific, with shows and maybe even a parade. Hooray, I thought, I get to play Halloween after all!

We took the 30 minute bus ride to the north side of town, and I was sure to keep the list of events I'd noted in my back pocket, just to make sure I wouldn't miss a thing.

The main strip is canopied from one side of the street to another. Each hour they project videos to various musical artists. We arrived just as "Time of the Season" by the Zombies (nice) started to play. I must admit, it is a spectacle to behold - psychedelic imagery pouring over the roof as the rest of the flashing lights on the street go dim.

Then there was the obligatory "Time Warp" (of course) with lots of pumpkins and skeletons. Really cute.

Once the show was over, I turned my eyes to the rest of the street. Bring on the Halloween decorations! Keep in mind this is day 4 of my trip, and with the exception of the pumpkins at the Bellagio, I had not caught a glimpse of Halloween - or fall - at all.

The Devil's in the Details

on October 9, 2010 - 11:25am

I don't know how I come across on the blog, but I generally feel fairly insignificant in my role as artist in the world. No, this isn't a "woe as me" statement. It's actually not even a classically Canadian self-deprecating statement. It's a simple fact. I mean, you folks know me, but it's not like I'm being stopped as I walk the streets of Toronto by people saying "Aren't you Ghoul Friday?". Halloween lovers and fellow haunters know my blog and my handle, but that's different. I'm part of an online community.

I'm talking about my presence amongst the masses, the folks I see in 3-D. The ones who can actually pick up my pieces, turning them in their hands, and not just rely on images I've uploaded.

And I always think I'll never see the people who buy from me ever again. Even if I did, I imagined it would be a passing "Hey, I know you. You're the eyeball lady".
