Mutterings of a Mad Woman

Black Thinking

on December 13, 2010 - 9:58am

Looking for a way to pass the time on this chilly, snowy, icy Monday? Look no further.

I give to you www.blackthinking.com. Part short films, part choose-your-own-adventure, it's a website with many rabbit holes to tumble down. So many, in fact, I haven't had the time to explore all of them.

It's just one of the many things I've been meaning to share with you for weeks. I can finally check it off my list.

Have fun!

Sunday Sculpting

on December 12, 2010 - 1:46pm

Spent part of the day working on the initial sculpt for some new Plague Doctors. I generally work a bit on one, then work on another one as the first one dries.

I'm glad to start getting faces on these. For a while, with just the base of white clay on their heads, all I kept seeing was the group of seagulls from Finding Nemo. Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine!

Christmas Decorations & Big News (99% Confirmed)

on December 7, 2010 - 7:57am

From a grand Halloween display in my office, I moved directly into tackling Christmas decorations in the living and dining rooms.

With the exception of one gift, I am done Christmas shopping.

I have one or two gifts to make, and then I'm free to create. This is important. It will be the first time in months that I will be able to create in an organized space, without distractions of other things I should be doing.

Not only do I look forward to the simple act of getting messy while making some monsters, but it's the last thing on my 'to do' list. In fact, I've been rushing like a mad woman to get the rest of the things done so I can get to creating.

Because you see, I have some news.

It's 99% confirmed. And being a pessimist sometimes, I generally like to keep news to myself until I know the good is going to happen. But I don't think I can keep it a secret any longer, and I don't think I can wait until January.

So here it is.

I'm going to be in the January/February issue of Rue Morgue Magazine.

Well, my Plague Doctors will, in their Needful Things section.

Ghoul Friday's Halloween Cabinet

on December 5, 2010 - 4:04pm

For years I've wanted a glass cabinet that would protect my art and display my personal collection of items. Thanks to an early Christmas present from ma mere (thanks mom!), all my goodies have a home.

It even has white and orange stripes on the backboard.

With a little creative cutting, I was able to make a hidden opening to run wires through so I could have two of my lamps and a string of lights inside.

The funny thing about it (wasn't funny until about an hour ago when I solved the problem) was one of the main items I wanted protected - the carnivorous plant - didn't fit. I kept trying to be ok with the idea, but finally decided enough was enough, and I pulled out the trusty hacksaw. I always thought the thing was too tall (hey, it was my first plant), and if I end up ruining it, well, that would solve my problem too and I wouldn't have to worry about the darn thing anymore (it hasn't looked right ANYWHERE I put it).

Did you know using a hacksaw on an item you're mad at is therapeutic?

With a little touch up, it all worked out.

Now let me take you on a tour of my cabinet.

Little Minions: Agatha

on December 3, 2010 - 2:32pm

Even with her reptilian-like skin, Agatha is arguably the darling of all my little minions.

She's sweet and gentle. Agatha enjoys strolling along and enjoying the world as a quiet observer. She rarely speaks and never raises her voice. She melodically hums while bending to examine flowers, or while ogling fish in a pond, or just simply listening to the hush of the wind.

Her wide-eyes express the wonder she feels, and I think it also gives us a sense of her kind spirit.

I almost kept her for my personal collection.

And of course, she's on Etsy too.

I have one more minion that could go in the store. He has a pumpkin for a head. Let's see if I have it in me to do another post.

Little Minions: Blart

on December 3, 2010 - 1:50pm

At 7.5 inches, Blart the Demon towers over the other minions I've made. If his size wasn't intimidating enough, his grimacing face and brimstone skin will make onlookers a little uneasy in his presence.

I should warn you, he has a tendency to snap at approaching fingertips.

He's listed on Etsy.

Little Minions: Harriet

on December 3, 2010 - 1:15pm

Harriet mumbles. Partly because she normally speaks with a light lisp, but mainly because she likes the sound of her words when they aren't coherent.

Her speech often deteriorates into gibberish, which leads to boisterous laughter on Harriet's part. She's so entertained by her own garbles and nonsense noises that she's prone to walk away in mid-conversation, chuckling to herself, completely unaware of the people she was chatting with.

Harriet is 5.5" tall.

She too is on Etsy.

Little Minions: Kitty

on December 3, 2010 - 11:19am

She's the first cat I've ever sculpted. Ever. Isn't that kind of strange? You'd think by now I'd have done at least a handful of them, but no.

I simply refer to her as Kitty, or Miss Kitty if I'm being formal.

She stands 5.5 inches tall, and wears a black shawl.

I know the red eyes and superstition around her black coat might make some people fearful, but look at that little pink nose. Nothing bad can come from something with such a cute nose, right?

Besides, look at that "Who, me?" expression. Totally innocent. In fact, she's a little shocked and appalled that you would imply she's up to no good.

I've put Kitty on my Etsy site, just in case anyone wants to nab her as a last minute Christmas gift. Will be adding a couple more minions soon.

Little Minions: Marjory

on December 1, 2010 - 9:11am

There's a few little minions you never got to meet before they were taken home to a new family. Marjory is one of them.

Shy and self conscious, despite her mighty horns, Marjory spends most of her time unsure of herself, making her even more socially awkward.

While she hasn't the ability to discuss complex, philosophical ideas, she does knows the important things in life: how to make the perfect gooseberry pie; how to touch her nose with her tongue; three marshmallows are the exact number to make her hot cocoa delicious; be kind to others (and bring pie to social functions as an ice breaker...or an excuse to hover around the refreshment table and not have to talk to anyone).

Posting Minions to the Gallery

on November 30, 2010 - 11:42am

One of the overdue tasks I've been neglecting is posting all the minions I've made to the gallery. I was hoping to have the new site up by now (ha ha ha), and was putting the project off until then so I didn't have more content to migrate.

ANYWAY, I couldn't remember if I ever shared with you a commission piece I made for friend and follower of this blog, Cooter. His wife asked me to make a pirate minion, and this is what I came up with.

Cooter has already received this gift, so I'm free to post it ;)

More minions to come!
