Mutterings of a Mad Woman

Plague Doctors: Final Figure For Series 5

on January 10, 2011 - 3:54pm

Generally speaking, these figures are without a particular or dominate sex even though I tend to use male pronouns when I talk about them. But this one...this one surprised me when my own thoughts, as I examined her while painting, included the word she. A female? Perhaps. Or at least feminine.

And she's staying with me as part of my personal collection.

You can see a few more pictures of here here.

Plague Doctors: The Blue Bruiser

on January 10, 2011 - 2:47pm

To make up for my lack of posts on the weekend, I thought I would push through and get one or two more up.

This, my friends, is the Blue Bruiser. With his red-tinted glass, he strikes me as a tough customer. Sure, you could say most of these figures have a certain air of danger, but...I don't know. Something about his pose. About those eyes. About his brooding colour.

It's amazing what a difference certain colours make. It completely changes the look of a figure, and the mood.

He is up on Etsy as well. (UPDATE: He's been adopted. Thanks!)

I think I might sleep better knowing he's been adopted by someone else.

Red Mask, White Mask

on January 10, 2011 - 12:27pm

As of this morning, all of the previous Plague Doctors have been adopted. Thank you to everyone who has given them a new home.

I spent the morning getting images together for the first 2 figures in Series 5. They are currently on Etsy (UPDATE: He's been adopted. Thanks!) and also have been added to the Art Ghoullery where you can see full images of each one.

It's been a while since I made a figure who wore his hat and had a white mask. I wanted to give him an appearance of old plaster.

And for the second image, I've never made a figure who wore his hat and had a red mask. I do so love the look of the red mask. Almost kept this one for myself.

The Gang's All Here

on January 7, 2011 - 1:05pm

Series 5.

They look cooler in a group.

One of these little darlings is staying with me. There's a second one who whispers they want to stay too, but I've firmly put my foot down and said no.

Will post individual pictures over the weekend, and get 3 of them up on etsy.

Plague Doctors: A Rusted Helmet

on January 6, 2011 - 12:30pm

Rounding out series 4 is a figure whose mask is actually a complete helmet.

Perhaps they are readying for war.

Or maybe it's a result of me watching too many Doctor Who episodes, and this is some sort of Dalek/Cybermen hybrid.

Whatever it is, it's resulted in a very unique figure with tons of tiny detailing.

Series 5 - the next group of figures - are waiting to be photographed. Two hold their hats, and two wear them.

The last group remains unpainted as of this moment. Once they are done, I'll be moving on to new creatures for a few months.

This figure is now posted to Etsy. (Updated: he has been adopted. Thank you!)

Plague Doctors: The Raven

on January 5, 2011 - 9:49am

This one is Yetch's favourite of the bunch. So if no one adopts him, it will make Yetch happy.

This is an example of another version I've been itching to do: all black. And I expect, at some point, I'll make another with similar colourings but for now, he's the only one of his kind.

You'd think with all of the Plague Doctors I've made, one would have been all black by now. But no.

I've given him a subtly soiled glove (and tip of his scarf). He was too "clean". He looked pristine. Like he never got his hands dirty, which honestly isn't the case, and you'd be foolish to think so.

I might give the other end of his scarf a bit of a blotch too. What do you think? Does it need it? Or does the one soiled area work on its own? Take a look at the other pictures below and let me know what you think.

He, too, is now on Etsy. (Updated: he has been adopted. Thank you!)

Plague Doctors: The Cardinal

on January 4, 2011 - 9:58am

Figure two in series four.

I've dubbed him "The Cardinal". He doesn't have all of the classic colourings of the aforementioned bird, but the word comes to me every time I look at him.

I've wanted to paint one of those leather hoods bright red for a long time. Especially since I painted that one mask bright red. Makes me feel better now that I have it out of my system.

He has joined his brother in my Etsy shop. (Updated: he has been adopted. Thank you!)

I can't tell if the set of pictures (below) look like a mugshot collection or some sort of record album promo card. I just like how it turned out. He seems to be photogenic with a little dash of cool.

More to come!

They're Coming...

on January 3, 2011 - 11:31am

FINALLY. Series 4 of the Plague Doctors is complete. There are 4 different figures, all holding their hats.

I've been working like mad - without rushing - to get these little beauties finished to coincide with the feature in Rue Morgue Magazine.

Photos have been taken but need to be edited still, which takes an amazingly long time, especially when they all need various specs depending on where I'm posting them.

The plan is to definitely get this one posted here and in the Art Ghoullery (done), and then post him to Etsy. (Updated: he has been adopted. Thank you!)

With this Plague Doctor, I wanted to revisit the white mask on a figure who wasn't wearing a hat. Attempted to create a more traditional mask - perhaps not traditional strictly to Plague Doctors, but in general mask making. Especially since most of the figures coming up are not traditional. In any way. They've certainly taken on a life and will of their own.

As Seen in Rue Morgue Magazine

on December 30, 2010 - 8:33am

Walked into a Chapters store yesterday while celebrating Yetch's birthday. And what should I discover? The January/February issue of Rue Morgue magazine has hit the stores.

We quickly flipped to page 14 and there they were.

I laughed and said "I'm famous!", much to the confusion of fellow shoppers nearby. Ok, so I'm not really famous. I need a word that expresses kinda-sorta-famous-in-a-particular-way. I tried using "fermus" but I'm not sure it will catch on.

I snatched up three copies - one for me, one for a friend, and one for my mother if she can't find it at her local store - and happily carried them to the front cash. The woman behind the desk, as she was ringing them in, said - half stating, half asking - "you have...three of the same issue."

"Yes" I said. "I certainly do."

Now, of course, I just need to finish the next set of Plague Doctors. There are 12 in total at various stages of completion. I expect to have 4 ready by next week.

There is still one left in my Etsy store from a previous series.

Do I need to makes signs for my tables at shows that read "As seen in Rue Morgue Magazine" now? ;)

Christmas Eve 2010

on December 24, 2010 - 9:09am

It's Christmas Eve at Ghoul's house. Last minute preparations are being made for a night of merriment.

And oh look! Santa's here! Glad he's early. I could use his help to finish cleaning. Odd, most of his presents are twitching and oozing. Looks like a great Christmas for me (though I'm not sure Yetch is going to like it as much. His present is growling).

So from me and Yetch, I wish you all a Merry Christmas, with a bit of nightmare sprinkled in.

See you when the wrapping paper settles.
