Mutterings of a Mad Woman

Face Off at Universal Studios Florida HHN

on October 24, 2014 - 4:54pm

In just over an hour, I will be hiding behind a pillow, mortified to see myself on Innerspace. The experience with the team who came to the house was fantastic. They made great efforts to make me feel relaxed despite my neurotic shyness and aversion to putting a spotlight directly on myself. And there was an actual spotlight to face along with the lens of a camera. As readers know, I generally avoid posting images or videos of myself online so this is a leap outside my comfort zone.

In honour of SPACE channel coming to the house, I wanted to get my images from Universal Studios Florida posted, featuring their Face Off models in wickedly wonderful costumes.

Next time I need to attend Halloween Horror Nights twice: once to look around, and once with a tripod! Considering these are all handheld photos taken at night, I think they came out pretty well.

I'm off to find the vodka.

And a big pillow.

The Purge at Halloween Horror Nights

on October 24, 2014 - 1:01pm

It is with no great exaggeration that I say it's been a busy month. I was a vendor at the Bazaar of the Bizarre, submitted pieces for Nightmare on Queen St at 416 Gallery in Toronto and attended the opening night masquerade party last night (404 Queen St E if you want to go have a peek), and had two days to decorate for SPACE Channel (Canada's SyFy equivalent for my American readers). I love sharing my work but the idea of being on camera made me hide under the couch. The episode actually airs this evening at 6:00 EST on Innerspace

With so much on my plate (not to mention an impending November move), I decided I would have my Halloween fun at the start of the month. I went with friends to Orlando for 5 days. One of our stops was to Universal Studios for their Halloween Horror Nights

I've decided to go through some of my pictures today and post a few for you. We'll start with "The Purge". I didn't have a tripod with me, so most of the photos are in the daytime for this streetscape. Luckily I did manage to get some fine night shots in other areas.

But for now, some daytime shots of what it's like to be immersed in a city where the culling of people is encouraged. Smoke and the sound of gunfire fill the air. And even in the sunlight, it's impressive.

October Shows!

on October 7, 2014 - 11:18am

Happy October! I've been celebrating the best month of the year in Orlando, eating up all the Halloween activities I could stuff into a few days (pictures soon). Now that I'm back, I realize I need to tell folks what the heck is happening this month.

Montauks: Bird, Bison, Badger

on August 28, 2014 - 11:28pm

First day of FanExpo 2014 has come and gone. And so has most of my Montauks! I only have one bird (the one with the shawl) and two badgers left (pending a pickup tomorrow). Whew! That was fast.

It was pretty bustling for a Thursday. Perhaps being on a long weekend has spurred folks to take an extra day or two off work.

Catacomb Creations

on August 22, 2014 - 2:32pm

I wanted to start making art people could hang. I know that shelf space is sometimes limited, and personally I like having cool things on my walls. I came up with the Catacomb Creations. Each one has a small wire loop that allows you to hang the item, but it's also hidden so you can display it any way you want.

FanExpo 2014 - The (Unofficial) Dead End in Artist Alley

on August 21, 2014 - 8:57am

This year, Festival of Fear is in the North Building. But that's not where the horror goodness ends.

If you meander through back streets and alleys (Artist Alleys, in this case), eventually you'll come across a Dead End

Less than Two Weeks to FanExpo 2014

on August 15, 2014 - 1:18pm

I have no idea how we've arrived in August, but Fan Expo is about to raise the circus tent in Toronto in less than two weeks. Despite my apparent black outs when it comes to time, my muscle memory has been hard at work, creating new beasties for the big weekend.

2014? What the...

on January 21, 2014 - 5:03pm

The site broke after Halloween. While my secret ninja web skills made it so published content could be viewed, the bug still remained that prevented me from uploading new content. Between work, ice storms, dealing with a small forest of downed tree limbs (still ongoing), and all that icky life stuff, we couldn't spend time to fix it until the new year.

But now I think it's all better.

Problem is, it's January. Life-sucking January. Motivation-squashing January.

Spring is when most people reorganize their houses. I, on the other hand, get obsessed with such tasks in the winter. Usually it's because I've turned my work spaces upside down by the time the chaos that is Halloween arrives. Full throttle creation leaves no extra time for proper storage of show gear or art supplies. never mind normal house stuff like hanging artwork that's been sitting around for months, or figuring out what special sort of light bulb you need for the ancient fixture in the bathroom.

And that's what I've been doing these last couple of months while waiting for the site to be fixed.

I even created a little nook of homage to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween in my office.

As we near February, I plan to finally start updating the site and maybe even start creating again. Wouldn't that be nice?

Happy Halloween 2013!

on October 31, 2013 - 4:44pm

Oh there's never enough time, to bake the goodies, or edit the pictures, or post the content.

The world doesn't understand it's Halloween and I have better things to do than deal with real life problems when there are candles to light, and treats to be eaten!

But I am pausing to post before the night completely gets away from me.

Look for pictures of the theme decorations in the next few days. Perhaps it will help with post-Halloween depression.

Happy Halloween, folks.

Do something nice tonight, even if it's a simple indulgence that makes you smile.

Ghoul Friday

Boo to You Parade

on October 30, 2013 - 5:36pm

I still have to take some photographs of my decorations. In the meantime, I thought you might appreciate seeing some pictures of the Boo to You parade that takes place during Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World.

The parade comes around twice a night, the second showing being far less crowded than the first.

I attended both, of course.

For that matter, I attended two parties, so you might notice a change in location, atmosphere and even some missing figures in photos of the same float. That's because the second night it poured, and I mean no fooling around rain that delayed the parade an hour. I will say though, I do like the pictures from that night a lot. There's something about the wet streets that add to the shots. Plus, that's the parade where Tweedle Dee (or Dum) came over and gave me a big smooch.

Unfortunately the Headless Horseman, who rides out before the parade starts, didn't make an appearance for the almost rained out parade, which meant I only have the blurry images from the first one. That being said, some of those blurs turned out pretty cool.
