Captain Clegg & the Night Creatures

How can you resist Zombie a Go-GO? And please note the little shout out to all the zombies in Toronto on the tv screen at the 35 second point.

Speaking of Peekaboo...

on July 16, 2009 - 10:30am

Peekaboo bird
While I work on my peekaboo plants, take a gander at some toys from the collection of Peekaboo Monsters posted by Pocket Full of Monsters.

While I really like the monotone design, they have another bird figure but this one is blue with its brains exposed. Nice.

I can't bring myself to talk price, but you can find out more information on the Spanky Stokes website.

Peekaboo Pods: Part 1

on July 15, 2009 - 12:52pm

Peekaboo Plant Pods - first stage
Now that the book is done, I can get back to prop making. One of the final things I'll be making for the Festival of Fear is a collection of 28 mini peekaboo plants.

I spent the morning cutting out circles of styrofoam to fill the base of each pot. I gathered some sturdy little branches for the stem support, and - while standing in my diningroom - used hedge clippers to cut them down to size. Nothing like chasing after projectile bits of tree launched off garden tools first thing in the morning.

Luckily, Yetch was still sleeping at this point.

Owls, Skulls and Moonshine

Jeremy Fish art
Spotted this on www.iwantyourskull.com. It's a piece by
Jeremy Fish.

I love owls and I dig skulls, so this is an easy piece for me to appreciate.

Of course, I'll be appreciating it from afar since it's selling for 800 Euros which is close to $1300 Canadian.

I suppose the price makes sense when you're designing for an organization called Superego.

Now where am I going to store my moonshine?

Brains vs. Coffee: The Book

on July 14, 2009 - 12:17pm

Brains vs. Coffee
I mentioned I had some news the other day, then the world conspired against me (ambulances, new car, attending a stag and doe) and I never got to announce it on the blog.

After writing 100 Brains vs. Coffee quotes, I decided to publish them in a book (I know, crazy right?).

Being someone who generally builds things on her own, I approached the book in a haunter fashion: make it yourself from start to finish. Layout, design, content, you name it (crazier, right?).

I will be 100% responsible for all compliments and criticisms it gets.

My devilish dears, I will not kid you. This project has been one of the toughest things I've taken on in a long time. It took me completely out of my element, and forced me to dive into the deep end.

Brooke Kent

Procession of the Nuns print by Brooke Kent
Brooke Kent is an artist and illustrator. She teaches full time but dreams of a future where she can live simply as an artist. She certainly has the talent required, so I thought I would blog about her and see if we can't help her get closer to her goal.

Not that she needs my help. As you can see by the wonderful print (posted right) entitled Procession of the Nuns, it should be only a matter of time before the masses swoop in and gobble up her ghoulish goodies.

The print, along with a number of other beautiful (and provocative) items, is available for purchase in her Etsy store, which is where I saw a necklace with the print in a glossy black enamel frame (pictured below).

I've had the page with the necklace open in my browser for many, many days. I really couldn't justify buying it, but I couldn't bring myself to close the tab.

A Little Freaky Tiki

on July 13, 2009 - 10:57am

Tiki drink Husband Killer
At a restaurant in Los Angeles called The Islander, a lovely 75-year old woman is seen here enjoying her tiki-encased drink.

The drink is called Husband Killer.

I hear it tastes like mangoes and revenge.

One Frazzled Ghoul

on July 9, 2009 - 4:24pm

Ghoul Friday frazzled
What a day. This little ghoul can't take much more excitement.

I was on my porch this morning, about to enjoy a fresh cup of brains...er...coffee, when I looked across the street and saw one of my neighbours collapse.

The elderly Italian woman that lives diagonally from us was resting on a retaining wall when suddenly she lost consciousness and tumbled backwards off the wall, landing on her neck on the sidewalk.

I sent Yetch to check if she was conscious while I went to grab the phone.

Amanda Louise and her Toothy Treasures

on July 8, 2009 - 11:31am

Amanda Louise art
Gather round, creepy kids, and let me introduce you to Amanda Louise and her disturbing darklings made of cloth and clay.

She is a graphic designer, student of perfumery, and soap maker. While she is no doubt talented in these areas, it's her creatures I am most interested in.

She uses porcelain teeth and glass eyes to give her creations that polished, life-like look. For a long time now I've wanted to start incorporating these materials into my work, and I think seeing her final products has given me the nudge I needed to start looking for resources.

I just love the expressions she creates with them. And there are many to see. Besides the handful I have posted here, I suggest you check out her flickr account highlighting her current show at the Rivet Gallery.
