Better Late Than Never

on September 24, 2009 - 2:24pm

Scarecrow hatI cannot recall a Halloween where I started building props so late. Sure, I made two sculptures earlier in the year, but for months I have not touched - hardly gave a thought to - my Halloween design plan.

It's a disconcerting thought. I feel like I'll be evicted from my spot in haunter circles.

Worse still, I'm not convinced I'll do a full display for this year's festivities. We'll just have to see how it goes.

But I am going to start work on a new prop.

It may come as a surprise, but I have never made a scarecrow before (well, not a life size one). I'm about to change all that. I have a very thin tree trunk for the base (plucked from my mother's front yard after the poor thing had given up the ghost). I've a collection of twigs for the arms. And this morning, I decided to go to the local Value Village second hand store to scope for a shirt, wighead, and maybe a hat (though I had one in mind).

Didn't find a shirt I liked, but I did get the wighead. And even better: a coconut leaf hat for $2.99. I think that will work quite nicely.
